Dear reader, typically, when we finish a leg of our journey, I summarize the experience with images I’ve captured along the way.
Recall Karl's arrival in Hull kickstarted a trio of visits to England during his global adventure.
He pedalled north, reaching Edinburgh on May 8, 1901, beginning his exploration of Scotland. On June 14, 1901, Karl set sail from Glasgow to Waterford, Ireland. He circled the island, covering 800 miles, and returned to Waterford. The journey continued as he boarded a boat to Southampton, England, explored London, sailed to Oostende, Belgium, and finally arrived in New Haven on the S.S. Paris from Dieppe, France, on July 31, 1901. His route led him through Wales to Liverpool, where he secured passage to Saint John, New Brunswick.
Having completed Karl's journeys through Ireland (Leg 3) and Scotland (Leg 8), this last journey (Leg 12) was to revisit all the locations he explored in England and Wales. I started in London, then travelled by train to Wales, progressing west and north, crossing into England at Chester, and meandering through the northeast, retracing Karl's path to the border of Scotland.
But for this edition of “what we saw along the way,” I wanted to share something different: the lovely messages written to Karl in his autograph book and the unique stamps from the postmasters he met along his journey.
Next week dear reader we are back to the west coast of Canada, I hope you join me there.
